Know what the number means
A board foot is a volume equal to 144 cubic inches. For thickness and width in inches and length in feet, divide their product by twelve. Four boards at 1 inch by 6 inches by 8 feet total 16 board feet, before any allowance.
For metric volume, thickness and width in millimetres are converted to metres before multiplying by length in metres. A 25 mm by 150 mm by 2 m board is 0.0075 m³. Four such boards total 0.03 m³.
Use the supplier's measuring basis
A quoted nominal board size can differ from its dressed dimensions. Confirm whether the bill uses nominal dimensions, actual dimensions or another trade convention. Enter the same basis when comparing a quotation. An allowance cannot rescue a cut layout that does not fit the available boards.
Finish coverage is a planning estimate
Use the coverage on the chosen finish label, count every coated surface and enter the required coats. Absorbency, application method and waste can change consumption. Round the result to available container sizes only after checking the product directions.
